GPU hangs up when watching vp9 VAAPI-accelerated video

Hi I recently installed the libva-intel-driver-hybrid and intel-hybrid-codec-driver from AUR to get VP9 hadrware decoding on my Braswell cpu everything installed smoothly but there is just one little problem, 1 of every 5 VP9 videos I open would freeze the pc, after some investigation turns out it was a GPU hang, this happens on mpv, vlc and firefox with hardware acceleration enabled, is there a way to prevent the gpu to hang and watch VP9 videos smoothly and ininterrupted? I really need this to work because watching youtube videos (or any other VP9 video) without hardware acceleration on a celeron with 2.16 ghz turbo boost is not something I would recommend to anyone, is there a fix?
this is the hang log

As the driver is built into the kernel, the only solution is to try different kernels, so please read this:

That hardware does not support VP9: VP9 - Wikipedia

You are stuck with software encoding for a stable experience.

It “partially” does, with the hybrid driver, but it’s not reliable according to some accounts.

The CPU is from early 2015, discontinued in 2018.

The hybrid packages from the AUR attempt to breathe new life into this CPU family. It’s a hit-or-miss with each owner’s results.

I already tried with 5.4 and 5.10, hang still occurs, I will try on newer kernels

yeah, although libva-intel-hybrid-driver is just a normal libva package with the hybrid flag, the sauce is on the intel-hybrid-codec-driver package, I read that using iommu_intel=on is supposed to help but isn’t that for virtualization? (it still hangs on my system though)

If none of them work, we might conclude that you have a hardware problem, unfortunately. I wouldn’t go any lower than 4.4 though…

:crossed_fingers:

tried 5.14 and it hanged even with a 240p video, thats a thing that even with software decoding runs fine so I would not know if calling it a hardware issue, also I dont want to go below 5.4 kernel because of real driver issues like desktop enviroment elements dissapearing and stuff like that.

Your GPU is hosed:

  • keep software rendering as that uses the CPU, not the GPU…
  • start saving up for a new machine.

:sob:

I blame intel, thanks for your answers, oh small detail that I had forgotten, the gpu does not hangs when runs of a tty (ej: on a tty run mpv -gpu-context=drm runs perfect) that means is not the gpu, is the driver.

In a TTY the option is set, but nothing runs, so I’m a bit confused by what you’re trying to say now…

easy, install mpv-full from aur, then go to a tty (aka ctrl+alt+f4) then go to a folder with videos and run this:

mpv -gpu-context=drm -gpu-api=opengl *.*

and it should open the video on the tty.

just did it so it works

Just for my education as I don’t have your hardware nor software:

  • You’re logged into a GUI with the driver activated
  • You can go to a TTY and then mpv -gpu-context=drm -gpu-api=opengl *.*
  • your GUI doesn’t crash

and:

  • running the same program in the GUI hangs the GPU

If my understanding is correct, can you run this:

journalctl --system --boot=0 --priority=err --follow

and then hand up the GPU again and provide the last 25 lines of output?

:face_with_monocle:

ok will try now

this is it, I just hanged the gpu but I dont see anything about it here, also checked the /sys/class/drm/card0/error and indeed says it hanged, maybe you see something?

set instead of err, warning and try again, please?

it posted? damn I though I had deleted sorry :bowing_man:
