Bottom panel disappears when mouse scrolling in Firefox

Since I did the latest update, I am observing a strange behavior within KDE, in conjunction with Firefox.

Basically, more often than not, if I scroll inside Firefox, the bottom panel (with desktops, taskbar, hour…) disappears and the Firefox window gets resized for a split second before getting back to normal.
Note that scrolling is a sure way to trigger the issue, but sometimes simply letting the mouse inside Firefox is enough.

I tried with Konsole and the issue does not show up.

Is this something anyone has encountered before?

I tried looking around for similar reports, but apart from whole screen flickers related to nvidia drivers that appear unrelated, nothing came out.

From what it looks like to me, firefox appears to be interpreting your scrolling as a “grab & move” mouse operation, whereby the panel disappears because it is most likely set to dodge.

This means that there are a few things to check…

  1. Right-click the panel and enter its “edit mode”. Make sure that it’s not set to dodge. There are several options…:backhand_index_pointing_down:

    • always visible
    • always hidden (will only appear if the mouse pointer is moved to the bottom of the screen)
    • dodge (will duck if the window is too large or placed too close to the panel)
    • et al

  2. Check whether pressing the scroll wheel on the mouse is set to scrolling, i.e. you press the scroll wheel, and moving the mouse up and down then scrolls through the document — which I believe is a Windows thing. Disabling this setting (:backhand_index_pointing_down:) will probably also prevent this behavior in firefox, provided that it’s not actually a bug in firefox — disclaimer: I don’t use firefox, so I cannot verify this.

The panel is in a fixed position and the mouse settings are just like yours.

In the process of editing those settings, I noticed the same issue happens in the system configuration application as well!

There was once a setting were the apps could cover the panel, or something to that effect. I wonder if it’s not that

In the panel options is Visibility set to “Always visible”?

Also do you have anything set in System Settings → Window Management → Window Rules?

Also what are your settings in System Settings → Window Management → Window Behaviour → Focus?

Likewise what are your settings in System Settings → Window Management → Window Behaviour → Window Actions?

As you will see, I have two graphics cards, but I only intend KDE/Wayland to use the integrated HD Graphics 530 and use the RTX 3060 for computing. I’m not sure I did it properly as nvidia-smi seems to indicate the contrary:

Maybe this is the source of this issue, even if it’s a bit strange that it would “zoom” windows and not actually corrupt the entire display.

Okay, I see what’s going on now. It’s a kwin crash. When your panel disappears, so does the open window’s title bar. This is indicative of the window manager (kwin) crashing and restarting itself.

As for what causes it, this is hard to say. It could be a Plasma bug, or it could be a crash due to the graphics driver not liking your scrolling — and considering that you mention that Nvidia is taking the lead here, I would not be surprised.

In theory, it could also be a firefox bug due to firefox trying to use the GPU directly, but considering that it’s also happening when you’re working in the System Settings window, I think we can rule out firefox as the culprit.

Just for the record, I’ve had a kwin crash here myself a few days ago. I’m not sure what triggered it, but I believe it was when I was testing out a few new wallpapers for my different Activities.

Or it could be an outdated ~/.cache/ directory yet again:
rm -rf ~/.cache/* and reboot.

I don’t think that would be the case. kwin normally does a good job of updating its cache entries, and considering that I had a kwin crash myself only a few days ago, I’d rather believe it’s a bug.

Well, you would notice the disappearing and reappearing of the window decorations. Or at least, with applications that don’t use client-side decorations — i.e. firefoxin its default configuration, and anything gtk3- or gtk4-based. :wink:

I’d recommend trying the 580 series driver for this card rather than the latest driver.

I think @Aragorn is correct in it being a kwin crash, but why? Hopefully the 580 driver is more stable.

I don’t think this is the case but this is also a quick easy thing to test that won’t cause any harm.

As for Firefox, make sure the “Use recommended performance settings” is enabled as this enables/disables features based on your hardware and environment. Some combinations are known to cause issues and Firefox/Mozilla has a internal database determining the best settings.

Its been quite some time since I configured an NVIDIA card on linux so I’ll leave that for someone with more experience.

What does the utilities nvidia-recommended-driver and nvidia-driver-assistant tell you?

If I understand this correct you appear to be using the proprietary version - I may be wrong but as I recall - Nvidia recommends the open driver.

For a system running on Linux 6.18 you can replace the current driver with the open driver

sudo pacman -Syu linux618-nvidia-open

Hum… looking in the journal, I see this repeated:

plasmashell[8726]: Final member StackingOrder is overridden in class QQmlDMAbstractItemModelData. The override won't be used.

Looking around I saw mentions of it related to a crash that also mentioned this:

But I tried the recommended things like fc-cache -r and then systemctl --user restart plasma-plasmashell.service but it did not change the behavior.

That may be but ultimately, I don’t even want wayland to use the Nvidia GPU at all because the display is not even plugged onto that card.
Looking around, all I could find was for a way to disable the integrated GPU in favor of the NVidia card, when I want to do the exact opposite, while also keeping the Nvidia GPU available for docker and computing.

It tells me open but then, I’m wary of changing this as I really need things to work for my compute tasks.

That’s not what was recommended here. fc-cache is for building font information cache files, not clearing the ~/.cache folder.

Ok; I moved to the “open” driver and rebooted.
The docker that used GPU for compute failed miserably until I reinstalled nvidia-container-toolkit
But even then, the issue was still there.

I then moved on to deleting ~/.cache and rebooted.
This did not change the situation.

If that’s a bug in KDE, where should I report this?

Note that I already reported this in 2025: Forcing X to use builtin graphics controller no longer works

I could not find a solution back then, but I’m not even sure this has an impact on this thread’s issue

It’s arguably better to first logout, then login via a TTY (from the login screen) and only then delete the ~/.cache/ directory, and reboot.

This ensures nothing is left in memory.
