My laptop runs manjaro, and I updated it either today or yesterday. Now, when I turn on the laptop via power button, it has a completely black screen, and nothing happens. No text on the screen either. I tried ctl + alt + F2, and tried holding shift while turning it on (power button has a light that shows some semblance of “on” or “off”) but nothing works to get it out of this state. Yes, it’s charged
Can you get to the firmware settings?
… the Bios settings?
depends on the machine which key you have to press
it’s F11 (I think) for mine
but my laptop also has got a dedicated button for this …
just to confirm that the thing is even still working …
nothing happens. Even for my specific laptop, can’t get into that settings menu. Maybe my laptop is kaput
hmm - then this seems likely:
Not definitive, though.
But if you can’t elicit any visual or audible response from the thing - it’s likely.
Another thing I noticed recently. When it is “on”, it stays on and even activates its fans if it gets too hot
also, the capslock indicator updates appropriately with the pressing of the capslock key
Well - does the screen even come on?
How about plugging in the USB drive with the ISO on it that you installed from?
From what you are telling:
the thing is broken - or even dead
It boots to a black screen, you say?
It just doesn’t do anything … apparently.
One test for a “dead” display is to shine a bright light at it and see if you can see anything, as it’s sometimes just the backlight. (This is more appropriate for external monitors, though. With laptops it’s often the interconnect cable which fails).
The better way to test is to plug another monitor in and see if anything shows on that.
What’s the laptop brand, model and year of manufacture?
Closing the loop on this for lost souls - I took it to a laptop store and they said the motherboard was shot. So, nothing to do with manjaro, and looks like the drive is OK
