Booting to black screen after update, no grub drive error

After updating today, I can only boot into a black screen. I am currently in usb live boot and I’ve tried following the wiki page “Restore the GRUB Bootloader” ([GRUB/Restore the GRUB Bootloader - Manjaro]) but after the “update the GRUB configuration” step, I get the following:

Also for what it’s worth, on the efibootmgr -v I see old OS’s I’ve tried and even Windows, which has never been installed on my laptop except in VM.

Hello @Kelltech

First, to prevent such ugly “12” numbers at the inxi output, use it it like that:

inxi --full --admin --filter --width 80 --color=0

The KDE Konsole seems to copy also the hidden color codes.

If efibootmgr creates entries with “VenHw” than it is Firmware bug or it needs some special formatting when creating an entry…

VenHw stands for the “Vendor Hardware Device Path”
HD stands for the “Harddrive Media Device Path”

These 2 are correct and must be both for Manjaro…

But I would rather think that since you use a hybrid gpu, there is a timing issue:

Replace MODULES=() with:

# the order of the modules matters
MODULES=(i915 nouveau)

at /etc/mkinitcpio.conf with an editor.

Then run sudo mkinitcpio -P to update the initramfs.

Hey @megavolt thanks for the instructions on getting non-ugly in I output, copied to my notes now!

I followed your instructions,

But on boot, I get past the splash screen and back to a black screen, no curser or anything. I can ctl-alt-f2 and properly reboot, but that’s it.

The please edit the kernel parameter and remove quiet from there. Then you should see a the verbose boot log on the screen.

Also when switching to another TTY, log in and try to start kde manually:

startx /usr/bin/startplasma-x11

If that does not work, post the journal here of the previous boot:

journalctl --boot -1 --no-hostname --no-pager

Also the xorg logs, located here: /var/log/

And when I rebooted, I had to do that again, so it’s starting the DE but only manually.

So the problem occurred 100% in the SDDM Display-Manager and not Plasma itself. However, can you post the log of SDDM?

The end of some lines are cut off. That happens in pager mode.

Just after boot instead of seeing the login, the screen goes dark, as if the monitor switches off. I can start TTY and the screen comes back and from there I can start Plasma, but that’s it.

Update: Installed the 5.4.x kernel, fixed it.
