Black Screen with Mouse Pointer after incomplete Update

Hi manjaro community,

after an incomplete interrupted update (yeah, yeah, I know…) I’m constantly ending up on a black screen with a white mouse pointer. I’ve tried several things I found while searching for simiar topics on the web but without any positive effect so far. Therefore I’m kindly asking for your support.

My setup
XMG Core 15 laptop with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 as the main GPU and an AMD Radeon Vega as an onboard graphic chip. I’m running a dual boot of Manjaro KDE and Windows 10.

I do have a relatively recent Timeshift backup, but I’m not sure if restoring that would solve the issue or cause more problems.

Actions so far
I’m not an advanced user and have just followed advice found in this forum. That includes switching to TTY Ctrl + Shift + F3, updating pacman sudo pacman-mirrors -f 5 && sudo pacman -Syyu and pamac pamac upgrade -a plus cleaning the caches.

I’ve also deinstalled and reinstalled my Nvidia driver sudo mhwd -r pci video-hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime && mhwd -i pci video-hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime.

Again, I’m not 100% sure if that was the right thing to do but it felt like low risk to give it a try. Unfortunately without success.

Thanks for the hint. I followed the instructions and it didn’t solve the black screen issue, unfortunately. However it impacted my dual boot setup and I don’t see the boot selection screen anymore preventing me from booting Windows now. One more thing to solve.

Running update-grub gave me this output:

Open /etc/default/grub in an editor, change the line reading… :point_down:

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden

… to… :point_down:

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu

… and run… :point_down:

I’m not sure, but I think this may just a spurious warning. Other people have reported that as well, but they didn’t report any ill effects of it afterwards.

I’m afraid I cannot help you with regard to the graphics driver issue — which is the core of your black screen problem, in my opinion. Hybrid graphics are always a nightmare, and especially when it involves Nvidia.

P.S.: Restoring your timeshift snapshot should in theory bring you back to the situation before the failed update, and if your system was working correctly then, then it will do so again after restoring the backup. But then of course you’ll need to apply the update again.

Thanks a lot, after also updating grub with GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false I’m back to my usual grub menu.

I’ll wait if someone else had the same or similar issue and an idea how to solve it. If not I will try my luck with Timeshift.

Did you leave this line Commented or Uncommented?

  • Commented: OS Prober will be disabled (default); other Operating Systems will not be detected during boot.

  • Uncommented: OS Prober will be enabled; other Operating Systems (Windows) will be detected during boot.

It’s desirable to have this line uncommented in a multiboot scenario.

I’ve left it uncommented but needed to update grub from TTY instead of only from chroot.

Thanks for your replies. In the meantime I’ve been able to successfully recovered my Timeshift backup from two weeks ago and run all updates without any issues. Another good reminder to always have a backup at hand.
