Black screen since the latest update (tty ok)

Hello
I’m stuck since the latest update (black screen but tty ok).

Here some logs.

Thanks.

Hello, I was suffering the same problem minutes before.

I found in the file /etc/sddm.conf.d/kde_settings.conf, there was nothing after Session=, so I simply changed it to Session=plasma.desktop and fixed it. I don’t know why but it does help.

(I’m not very familiar with the forum and English language. Anyway good luck.)

Before the update, i don’t have this file in /etc/sddm.conf.d; i only have virtualkeyboard.conf…

If i update all packages except sddm and sddm kdm (i don’t try sddm alone), i can connect to the desktop.
The problem is sddm…

New info (thanks papajoke):

I can stop upgrading sddm but i’m not sure it will be safe in the long run…

@rfoo provided the solution. Manual intervention after the update might be necessary. You might want to either do the update while in Gui to edit /etc/sddm.conf.d/kde_settings.conf after it has been created in a more comfortable environment for you before restarting, or do it via cli. Thing is the file is only created with the update and you need to change the Session= line if it does not include plasma.desktop. Otherwise everything should be working.

Edit:
Sometimes the file is not created at all and might need to be created manually,

Yes, i saw his post but, after updating, i don’t have the file kde_settings.conf.
I need to reboot to see it and then modify the file with tty?

Thanks

Possible yes. I personally downgraded the sddm package so i could easily do it from gui. I don’t know exactly when the file is created.

Weird: i did a timeshift then updated all packages except sddm and no such file in the directory…
I just update sddm and no such file either (not rebooting yet).

So it is likely created at bootup if it doesn’t exist at that point. Thx for the detailed feedback. So you would realistically need to change the file in cli with nano with the command
sudo nano /etc/sddm.conf.d/kde_settings.conf

No such file after reboot.
I created it (only one line in this file?) but black screen…
Fortunately i have sddm sddm-0.18.1-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst in my home.

No, it would normally not be just one line. :sweat_smile:
It would look more like this:

[Autologin]
Relogin=false
Session=plasma.desktop
User=*username*

[General]
HaltCommand=/usr/bin/systemctl poweroff
RebootCommand=/usr/bin/systemctl reboot

[Theme]
Current=breath

MinimumUid=1000

I knew it!! :smiley:
Thanks a lot, all is fine now.

And thanks to @rfoo too obviously.

The solution was indeed to create the file settings (no idea why it wasn’t already there).

confirmed, same issue occurred since around week ago when latest big updates appeared in update manager…same solution, editing /etc/sddm.conf.d/kde_settings.conf to add missing parameter somehow in line with Session= which should be Session=plasma.desktop. Some users experienced even completely lack of this file kde_settings.conf so the whole content needed to be recreated

this is done definitelly by some internal Manjaro KDE update stuff, not by some individual users ingerention using 3rd party soft or other manually modifying files or code

I totally agree.
