Black screen on boot after changing username

I recently changed my username to stop my system from deadnaming me, and ever since then I’ve been having an annoying issue on startup.
My install hangs at a black screen with a mouse cursor, and I have to switch to tty2 and run startx to get into a desktop environment.
What can I do to fix this?

you are running eol kernel, so install different kernel, reboot, select the different kernel in grub menu, boot with it and remove this 4.14 eol

Ok, I tried that, and nothing changed
What do I do?

which kernel did you installed?
post output from:
journalctl -b0 -p4 --no-pager
find /etc/X11/ -name "*.conf"

I installed kernel version 5.19.0-2.

you can try this first, if it doesnt work, you can reset your plasma afterwards:
rm -rf ~/.cache/*
rm ~/.config/Trolltech.conf
kbuildsycoca5 --noincremental

Unfortunately that didn’t work.
I tried resetting plasma earlier to no avail as well.

so first you running an extremely old kernel, the 4.14 and then you switch to the latest experimental kernel 5.19… install the 5.15, boot with it, and if you get stuck again, provide logs from this kernel …

go to system settings/kde wallet and uncheck enable the kde wallet subsystem, click apply, then post output from:
find $HOME/ -name ".Xauthority"

/home/lily/.Xauthority

so remove it:
rm /home/lily/.Xauthority
reboot

That didn’t do much of anything, aside from require me to put in my wifi password again.

so did you removed the xauthority?
create a new user, and test with it

Still the same problem

… deadnaming

What exactly did you do?
How did you do it?

If you did it via command line, it’s all still in the shell’s history …

That might provide some clues.

This is what I did.

usermod -d /home/lily /home/matthew
usermod -d /home/lily -m lily
ln -s /home/lily /home/matthew

I suppose you did consult the man (manual) page for usermod -it explains how the command is to be used.

man usermod

I would have interpreted it like this:
(see synopsis at the beginning - first come the options, then the login - no options afterward, like you did)

… my assumption here being that your old user account was lily and the to be the new one is matthew
I do not know whether I have got this the right way around - It was not clear to me from the available context.

usermod -m -d /home/matthew lily

I will test it - but I did not as of yet.

There should be no need to symlink the old to the new.
As I didn’t test it, I don’t know whether the old one will even still exist after that command.
… and, of course, you might need admin rights to alter/change a user account, especially if it is an admin account … did not test

Since the old user account was likely also the admin account (sudo rights …) you might need to adjust that separately so that the new account is also admin.
… did not test it yet

Personally, I’d have just created a new user account and moved my stuff over to that one.
But you chose this way and that’s o.k.

… symlinking is probably not a good idea - and should not be necessary anyway

btw: re your title

you did not just change your username as you intended - you attempted to move the whole account from one $HOME directory to another

The old account was actually matthew and the new one is lily. (I am transfem)

you did not just change your username as you intended - you attempted to move the whole account from one $HOME directory to another

Ah, I see. I followed a guide online that suggested doing that so that’s why I did that. My bad!

hmm - I don’t know which guide you followed
or whether it is working for you right now
but:

I’d always refer to (and trust) this “guide” - the Arch Wiki

Users and groups - ArchWiki

It’s a bit of reading
but everything relevant is in there

… or just create a new user (as already mentioned)
and transfer (copy) your data to this new account
and then use that one
instead of trying to modify an existing account in order to change the login name
