Audio "pop" with any audio source or application

Just installed 17.1.11 KDE flavour
I hear random “pops” in audio playback in VLC, Chrome, Firefox.
I suspect that this is related to the audio driver installed automatically on the system.
The specs for this MB say “Realtek ALC887 codec”

Checked the audio power save, the file modprobe.conf was not there - /etc/modprobe.d/
I started playing around with the kernel governors
I changed (echo performance | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor) them to performance, but cpupower frequency-info still shows that the CPU frequency jumps around, which is probably what is causing the skips, or pop in the audio played.
I will keep messing with this to see if I can get it right.
