Audio not very good (but works)

This has already happened one time in the past, but today my audio sound started being strange.
No updates no modification to any component in the system was done. In the last days I have been only browsing the internet.

The any sound that my system plays has like a little ticks in it and sometimes it gets really disformed (like I cannot recognize what sound is playing).

I don't remember how this was solved in the past, but I guess it was with a reboot, since I always try that and when it happened I didn't end up posting this bug.
I have tried a reboot now, and still I get the problem.

Just to post so that someone might try to give me pointers how to fix this on my system or fix the bug on PulseAudio.

Now it has no problem, and I haven't done anything

Now the same problem has returned...

Your system is seeing that you have a USB sound card installed. This message is a bit worrying however.

This looks like the kernel is "timing out" while trying to initialize your USB sound device. This usually means that the hardware is failing.

Try turning your computer completely off and uplug the USB sound card. Leave the USB sound card unplugged for 5 minutes to allow the capacitors inside it to fully drain. Plug it back in and boot your computer. See if that took care of it.

I have had to do that in the past with a USB sound card.

Finally, if you use the sound card built in to your motherboard, is the sound okay?

I hope this helps.

Will try that.
I believe this a more updated log:

In your updated logs, I am seeing error 32. It is my understanding that this error is also related to the kernel not being able to initialize the USB device.

I unpluged the USB audio headset for a day. Plugged back in, booted and now I get no sound.
This is my

Seems that this entry
torre daemon/audio[849]: audio_config.go:192: open /config-1000.json: permission denied
is the one responsible for my audio problem.
I have tried to find audio_config.go and config-1000.json to change file permission but I cannot find such files...

@linesma how can I solve my problem? is it still a kernel problem? who to reach out?

Thank you

UPDATE:
I also have this that I don't know if its right:

# egrep "audio|pulse" /etc/group
audio:x:92:fernando,daniel,pulse,liquidsoap
pulse:x:58:liquidsoap
pulse-access:x:59:liquidsoap

I have in the past added my radio broadcast user "liquidsoap" to pulse and pulse-access. Is this right?

@dannysantos1985 Are you getting sound from the sound card that is on your motherboard?

You should not need too add your user to the pulse-access file. It should have been done automatically when you installed the system. If it is not there, it would not hurt to add it.

I am sorry, it looks like we are going into an area that is beyond my knowledge. I see if I can get somebody with a little more knowledge to look in on this thread.

by this do you mean you have a separate user on your current manjaro install?

when you added the other user/s to pulse/pulseaudio you may have messed up permissions by mistake, i would take care of this first.

sudo chown -R $USER $HOME

then reboot

@dannysantos1985
Hey!

Sorry to hear that you're having this problem, i believe i also have it on one of my setups which have USB soundcard.

  1. Are those short bursts of noises (like ~ 1 second long)?

  2. Sometimes do you have after those shot bursts of noises all audio going speeded up or down?

I don't know exactly what to do with it either, we need someone more familiar with Kernels / alsa.

But in my case here's what i gathered so far:

  1. Initially i though that this was problem with my soundcard, because i use RME Fireface UCX and this was known prior to this patches for Kernel 5.1 as unsupported. (btw, anyone knows how to actually verify if our stable Kernel 5.4.1-4 actually use those patches?)

  2. My soundcard can be used with Linux only in CC mode (class compliant with usb 2.0 standard as standalone device), which limits it's channels from 6 in / 6 out to just 1 in / 1 out in alsa / pulseaudio / jack.

  3. At least for me, in 99% of cases those short bursts of noises lead to audio going at slower / faster rate are caused by very specific things:

    • Opening Deepin settings
    • Using VirtualBox VM
    • Using two programs simultaneously with different sample rate audio going through (for example browser with 44.100 Hz and audio foobar2000 on Wine with 44.800 Hz audio going through)
  4. All those cases are definitely get triggered by different sample rates playing (/ got requested by settings) at the same time, which would explain slowdowns / fastups of audio after those noise bursts.

  5. On Windows same soundcard in non-CC mode with usual driver can easily play any sample rates simultaniosly, through both usual windows driver modes and ASIO (it's actually rare to see soundcard which can do this at all).

  6. I've noticed that in Deepin you can reset slowdowns / fastups after those noise bursts, by changing to another Output device and back, audio will get to normal state.

  7. I'm not sure that this error is directly connected:

jun 01 20:23:04 torre kernel: usb 5-1: 1:1: usb_set_interface failed (-62)

Since at least in my case if i trigger this behavior - i will not get those errors all the time, but yes if i work for 6-12 hours i had seen those errors too.

P.S. I had only few things in mind for my personal case to try out:

  1. Try my UCX in non-CC mode to see if it works that way with those 5.1 patches.

    • Tested this one - doesn't work without CC mode.
  2. Try live Manjaro KDE or something else, to isolate and know for sure that it's not Deepin (which i really doubt).

Thank you

Done that, still I get the same issue. Which now is not "Audio not very good (but works)" it is "Sound doesn't work" (which was the same before the reboot, since I have followed @linesma unplug advice).

@keybreak I believe did not get a speeding up or down audio. Was just some ticks and sometimes the audio got really disformed.

Now I don't have audio at all :slightly_frowning_face:

UPDATE:

My user it is not "liquidsoap" it is "daniel" (it is not part of the group pulse-access, don't know if that is ok - manjaro didn't put it in that group)

  • test the usb audio device on another computer, if the problem persists to other devices it's time to get a new one.

  • make sure pulse is running in user mode
    systemctl --user restart pulseaudio

  • run alsamixer and make sure the device is not muted, use F6 to select the device. you can also try muting the built-in sound card.

  • check pavucontrol and make sure the output device is the usb sound card, also check the "configuration" tab and have it set to analog, also try the digital option if avalable.
my external sound device is labeled "GS3"

EDIT: i sent this earlier but i guess i didnt go through with the forum having issues.

and if none of that works, backup/remove any current pulseaudio configurations and re-install pulseaudio. do not try to uninstall pulseaudio, it takes a ton of dependencies with it and you'll be left with a broken setup, not just broken sound. so re-install only

systemctl disable pulseaudio --now
sudo rm -rf /etc/pulse/*
rm -rf ~./config/pulse/*
sudo pacman -S pulseaudio pulseaudio-alsa
systemctl --user enable pulseaudio

given there were no errors, reboot and test. you may have to select the usb device from pavucontrol for it to be the default. also consider installing pasystray which makes handling pulseaudio much easier and has a lot more functionality to it.

Thank you @dglt. In pavucontrol my usb audio device was not set to with as defined to be used. Now it works.

If the ticking sound appears again I will say so in here.

Thank you all

NOTE:
Manjaro forum is quite slow today. If someone else feels it too, maybe a warning could be given to the website maintainer. You're all the best!

But that's what i was asking, is it like screechy burst of noise for ~1 second or it's continuous for you?

Because if it's short burst - than i have same issue.

You can try to trigger it by

Pretty sure it will continue

It was kinda continuous.

I have tried opening the Manjaro Settings and Control Settings (I don't have a Deepin Settings) and my sound is ok.

So I'm not having problems.

Thank you
