When dGPU plugged in, does not boot (Failed to load kernel modules)

Hello,

So I have a desktop with an AMD 5700G CPU with iGPU, when I plug in the HDMI cable to the mobo I have no issues using Manjaro. However, when I plug in the HDMI in the GTX 1070 that I have (which used to be in a eGPU box, which I have installed on the mobo), Manjaro won’t boot, I get the “Failed to load kernel modules” error twice and hangs there.

(can’t upload pics or links yet) took pics of journalctl, Inxi, and Mhwd outputs…

What can I do?

I’d like to point out that the dGPU used to work before an update, although it’s been a while since I last used the GPU due to not needing it, so I don’t remember which Kernel update led to the problem. Now I’d like to use it for a video game, hence the question.

That’s what i can get when I plug the HDMI to the mobo and use the iGPU, the results for mhwd are a little different than when in TTY while the HDMI is plugged in the dGPU.

unisntall nvidia drivers:
sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia-470xx
and install these:
sudo mhwd -i pci video-hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime
reboot and test

I had these drivers before, they didn’t work, I uninstalled them and installed the 470xx based off another thread that I found. I can try again.

kvm is for virtual machine, so are you running some virtual machines?

nope, I don’t understand why that’s showing up.

I installed video-hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime, rebooted, plugged the HDMI in the GTX 1070 and same thing, Failed to load kernel modules appears twice and seems to hang there. I didn’t do journalctl this time though

so when you unplug it from the nvidia you can boot normally? do i understand it correctly?

That’s correct, When the HDMI is plugged in the mobo, it works fine, it’s only when the nvidia is plugged in that the boot fails. the journalctl that I posted earlier is the result of using TTY during the failed boot.

those logs dont show anything except the kvm - virtualization errors…
check logs now that you normally booted if these kvm errors are there too

How can I copy/save the output of journalctl while in TTY? The output changed and its too long to take a pic.

kate /etc/environment
and add there this line:
QT_LOGGING_RULES='*=false'
it will disable the useless kwin/qt logs, so that logs are more readable…


install the 5.19 kernel - not the rt one - from system settings/kernel, reboot and connect the hdmi to nvidia and see if it helped …
