Applications constantly freezing up computer constantly

I have about a 6-7 y/o gaming laptop that should be able to functionally run the programs I’m using (i.g. steam downloading and browsing firefox simultaneously) quite easily however the entire system pretty much freezes and forces me to reboot/restart due to unresponsiveness. Ksysguard from what I understand keeps reporting cores being used at around 10-20% and practically have some of them spike to 100% or near that amount when I open programs (some as simple as the terminal for example) which is odd to me. Had four 3 firefox tabs, steam, terraria, discord, and some diagnostic packages/programs such as terminal and as soon as i opened 1 new tab just a few minutes ago, the system also freezed up/stuttered for like a solid 10-20 seconds.

I have tried testing the performance of games like CS:GO and it all seems way under the expected performance line that this laptop used to perform at years ago before I switched to KDE plasma to experiment with Linux as a new user. Even comparing to Windows 10 right before I installed plasma it was arguably less frustrating, albeit slower overall. I don’t really know how to troubleshoot fixing performance issues beyond maybe just switching to XFCE and/or checking ksysguard for any tasks that may be unnecessarily taking up resources and terminate them like I have done for so long when I used Windows 10. Can anyone help here?

You need more swap.

I’m assuming the best way to add more swap is by making a swap file (since the swap i have right now is partitioned afaik) but I’m not sure how to make one. I tried doing

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=4096 status=progress

by using the swap page for manjaro as help but it said text file is busy in terminal.

in short my question is how do i get more swap?

It says the file is busy due to the fact that it is actively being used as swap. You will need to disable it in order to change its size. This will temporarily disable all of the swap you have, so make sure you are not maxed out on memory when you do this.

sudo swapoff -a
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=4096 status=progress
sudo mkswap /swapfile
sudo swapon /swapfile
