AMDGPU improvements for Manjaro OUTDATED

#827

@Tids I see to your git commits that you upgrade the mhwd-addon-amdgfx-hwe PKGBUILD (20170604, 20170615, etc).
Why don’t you push these changes into the repositories, because I’m with mhwd-addon-amdgfx-hwe 20161231-1 yet.

#828

Isn’t this already implemented in manjaro/mhwd-db? What’s the difference now?

#829

Because I really dont have any testing time and if my code is broken, also no time for a fast fixup :frowning: Whats right now in my git is completely untested :disappointed_relieved:

part of it. the amdgpu-experimental stuff will stay in my package for a bit longer. Luckily the experimental PCIIDs have already moved to mhwd. So less work on this part.

#830

@Tids @Chazy
Hello, how can I do to uninstall amdgpu and install radeon driver ?.

I try with:
1: Create blacklist for amdgpu with /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu_blacklist.conf

"Blacklist amdgpu".

2: Load module radeon with /etc/modules-load.d/radeon.conf

"Radeon".

3: Uninstall xf86-video-amdgpu.
4: Install video-ati.
5: Run mkinitcpio -P

But after doing this now I get error:

"Failed to start simple desktop display manager"

I reinstalled AMDGPU and it works without problems, but I want to go back to radeon or if there is a possibility to run the HDMI Audio. Thank you

#831

What is your graphicscard? Only GCN 1.0 and 1.1 are able to switch between radeon AND amdgpu experimental. All other chips are only supported in radeon OR amdgpu.

#832

@Tids My graphics card is Sapphire R9 270x 2Gb GDDR5.

So, if I install AMDGPU I can not go back to radeon ?. I have to say that probe the game ARK Survival Evolve and with the radeon driver walked at 45 FPS, but it was unplayable, and closed. With AMDGPU I work between 35-45 FPS, but it goes much more fluid and does not close, you can play without problems. If it were possible to use HDMI audio with AMDGPU I would like to, but for the moment I will continue with AMDGPU and use PC audio. regards

#833

@Fedex15 why not use a dedicated sound system for gaming? instead of the built-in speakers from the tv/monitor you’re using? I’ll never understand why’s so important hdmi audio for gaming, when the audio quality is mediocre at best (compared with a cheap 50-60 usd 5.1 sound system from creative for example).

#834

@Chazy I have the pc connected to the monitor and the tv. I use the monitor to navigate, games, etc, and I use the tv to watch netflix, movies, etc, but for now I will use the speakers. Thank you

#835

Of course you can switch back ba undo everything you did to get amdgpu support in :joy:

You can also use the amd staging kernel from

[mesa-git]
Server = http://pkgbuild.com/~lcarlier/$repo/$arch

repo, that has enabled the DC patchset, and so HDMI-Audio. Of course all the manjaro made kernel modules are not compatible with it, so you need to build them by yourself (for example the virtualbox one).

#836

Hi Tids, what would your recommendation be, stay with the current kernel or test the kernel amd staging ?. I have no idea how to test the kernel that you tell me, for now I’m still with the AMDGPU driver that has given me better performance in the games and I use the pc computer sound. With that kernel you tell me, you can turn on HDMI audio using AMDGPU ?. Thank you

#837

Yes. That should work. And thats probably what i would do. Depends on what gives me the best performance. :smirk:

#838

Hi again, I’m stuck with the catalyst drivers, I try with ati drivers but not work (AMD, proprietary or open source drivers not work). I followed step by step what have done @FedEx15 (AMDGPU improvements for Manjaro OUTDATED) to install the amdgpu drivers and install without any problem, the system starts in the LXDM without problem but after a couple of seconds the monitor is without signal as if disconnected, and when I start at the terminal the cursor is flashing. Check the videos:

lxdm

terminal

Happened with all kernels that I have installed: 4.9, 4.10, 4.11, the Xorg.0.file - https://pastebin.com/wZ0qZaBk

My card is a HD7850 (GCN 1.0)

#839

@Tids. Hi tids, install amd-staging-kernel by following these instructions:
1- Edit /etc/pacman.conf by adding these lines:

[mesa-git]
SigLevel = PackageOptional
Server = https://pkgbuild.com/~lcarlier/$repo/$arch

2- Update the repositories with “pacman -Syyu”
3- Install linux-amd-staging and linux-amd-staging-headers

4- Update grub.

Then start from the grub with the amd-staging kernel, but do not go beyond the following screen:

I’m with the 4.9 kernel now with no problems, which may be that it’s past that it does not work ?. Thank you

looks like Kernel Modesettings are inactive for some reason…

can you do:

zgrep -i "amdgpu" /proc/config.gz
grep amdgpu /proc/modules

it could be that this kernel is build without amdgpu experimental support, wich would be bad.

Thanks for your help.

#843

Ist this with AMD staging kernel? You need to load this kernel to get the right config :joy:

#844

@Tids
But I can not load it, it stays in version version 232 and it does not go beyond that screen, it does not let me access control + f2 console mode, how else can I give you what you need ?. Thank you

#845

But since there is a xorg log it means that it was able to boot to xorg. Try to add 3 as bootoption in grub. That should let you boot without xorg startup.

@Tids
I have tried with option 3 with the amd staging kernel and it stays the same, locked in starting version. I Try option 3 with kernel 4.9 and function 10 points, text mode with no problems. I try from a live cd using chroot, but when I do “uname -r” it tells me that it’s in the 4.9 kernel, I’m still searching the internet and trying to access it even if it’s by console. If you can think of a different way you can access it, I would appreciate it. Thank you
