After login Desktop Icons not shown if preference "Show preview thumbnails" disabled

After login my desktop Icons are not shown if the preference “Show preview thumbnails” is disabled. Only the default icon placeholders are shown. However, icons will load either on mouseclick or selecting a icon desktop area with a rectangle.

First I tried to clear the icon cache, but still the same issue after login. This never happened before the latest update.

Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.2.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.8.0
Qt Version: 6.8.1
Kernel Version: 6.11.10-2-MANJARO (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 4 × AMD A10-7870K Radeon R7, 12 Compute Cores 4C+8G
Memory: 14,6 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: KAVERI

Welcome to the Manjaro community.

This seems consistent with my understanding of how these preview thumbnails should work, however, I have not noticed:

I’m sure others will provide additional feedback when they are able.

As a new forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements; in particular, the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

The Update Announcements should be checked frequently for important update related information.

These announcements contain a Known Issues and Solutions section and should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

Output of the following command formatted according to forum requirements (see links above) may be useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

Be prepared to provide more information and outputs from other commands when asked.

Regards.

First, can you confirm this issue?
Did you really try to re-login with the preference I posted above, or not?

I use KDE Plasma personally. With Show Previews deactivated, no document icon previews are shown, as expected.

Neither is the condition you describe a noticable outcome after logging out and in again.

In short, I am unable to reproduce this.

You could try creating a new User account to see if the same issue manifests. If it does not, this outcome will indicate that whatever the problem might be, it’s limited to your current User account.

This knowledge alone will save others potentially much wasted time and guesswork, which ultimately helps you.

Report back with those results.

Now, please attend to the other matter of providing information in accordance with forum requirements. Doing so will help others to help you more easily. Read through the links previously provided; they are not given to complicate matters, but for your benefit.

For example, what you have given as system information appears to be from fastfetch (or similar) output – perhaps fine if we were looking to buy a computer, but otherwise limited – the inxi command given will provide information generally more useful to those wishing to help.

Regards.

I tried this already, but same issue.
Sorry, but unable to post screenshots - probably due to forum restrictions.

Thank you.

With this information, others might better determine whether there are specific system-related factors that might be contributing.

In the meantime;

You might also try removing the .cache directory.

It is safe to delete this, but it must not be done while the GUI is not running. After deletion, the directory content will be progressively recreated with fresh data as you continue using your computer.

1. Reboot to the SDDM login screen.

2. Login via a TTY:

Ctrl+Alt+F3

3.Remove the .cache directory:

rm -rf ~/.cache

4. When completed, logout from TTY, switch to SDDM:

Ctrl+Alt+F2

and reboot.

Please note any relevant changes as a result of this.

Regards.

Screenshots are not encouraged for text content. Pasting to a preformatted text box (as you did) is always preferred. Screenshots with no apparent value will often be removed by the Moderation team.

Your general forum privileges will increase the more you actively participate in the forum; that is, read links given, use forum features, etc; it’s fairly automated as part of Discourse, which the Manjaro forum is built upon.

Quick tip: Currently you cannot post live links either – a practical workaround follows this example:

https://forum.manjaro.org

This still allows others to copy/paste the URL with relative ease, if needed.

Removed the whole .cache directory from tty at login, but still the same issue.

Please note, and as I mentioned already, just enabling preference “Show preview thumbnails” makes all icons load normally after login. This indicates that this issue is not related to a corrupted cache.

Does the issue also occur when you are logged into a Plasma Wayland session?

Just tried Wayland, but same problem.

Just what is it you’re expecting to happen when enabling or disabling “Show Previews”? So far, you seem to be describing what normally should happen, with or without logging out/in.

Your responses up until now have been (paraphrasing) “Did that. It didn’t work”. It would be more helpful from the onset if you had listed those things you have tried in your first post.

Please, list everything you have tried and show the results, so that you’re not causing further unnecessary duplication of effort from those wishing to help.

I expect “Disabling previews” to stop showing mini previews of images files, linked on the desktop. Instead I like to see the general image symbol, different in colour depending on image type.

Please do not confuse this with regular application icons when apps have been added from launcher to desktop. All those apps have a different different app icon (different symbol and color, e.g. Xfce terminal or LibreOffice Writer).
But shown is just the same placeholder icon, exactly the same black-white symbol for any application linked on desktop.
Any desktop icons should be loaded automatically, showing the specific application symbol, and certainly this worked all the time before.
Again, this happens only after login or auto-login. Once refreshed (just by drawing a rectangle around all icons with the mouse) icons are shown until next login or boot.

There was just one thing I missed in my first post: Creating a new user account for testing purpose as suggested above. I apologize, I did not remember this at the time. But there is nothing else to mention.

There is no confusion.

This too is what I would expect, and indeed is the result of disabling “Show Previews”; document previews are replaced in favour of the default document icon; “document” also includes images, in this respect.

I cannot reproduce what you describe. I have since returned to Wayland and will spend no further time chasing this. Whatever the issue might be seems specific to you; or, at least, I can find no known information that suggests otherwise.

Perhaps it might be an artifact of some other condition. I have no way of determining what that might be. You might try working your way though the Known Issues and Solutions sections of recent Update announcements to see if any might apply to you, and subsequently have any affect on this apparent condition.

Regards.

This was really helpful, but anyway, thanks for your and others attention.

On the chance that others might notice anything similar, this thread will remain open for additional input. If the condition seems to magically disappear (after an update, for example) please leave a brief note to that effect.

Regards.
