Hi everyone, I’m a newbie on Manjaro. I have the latest stable release with XFCE. I configured the nVidia drivers with mhwd through the settings manager. On the first reboot, I get a black screen. I edited the /etc/default/grub file and added the parameter nomodeset
, and with this fix, it works fine. Can I leave the grub boot like this, or should I dig deeper into the problem with your help?
Thanks
Sorry kommow, missed that you are using xfce, so ignore my previous comment if you saw that.
I think best to start by providing more system information:
sudo inxi --filter --verbosity 8
kommow, can you edit your post using this formatting instruction:
make sure to copy all of the output from the inxi command and paste into preformatted or blockquote
Thank you for the suggestion. I thought it was correct in HTML, but it truncated the text. I apologize for the mistake.

For some folks, Plymouth causes problems. You could try:
- Remove plymouth hook from
/etc/mkinitcpio.conf
- Regenerate the
initramfs
for your kernel withsudo mkinitcpio -p linux
- Remove the word splash & quiet (and in your case, also remove nomodeset) from the Grub command line options via editing
/etc/default/grub
- Update Grub config file with
update-grub
(orsudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
) - After that the plymouth package and its themes can be removed. For example:
sudo pacman -Rsn plymouth plymouth-theme-manjaro - Restart your system
If you still end up with black screen, then you can put back the nomodeset in grub and wait for somone else to make a better suggestion.
Or you can leave things as they are until you run into a problem
I will try to follow the steps you wrote to remove Plymouth from the boot. Thank you for the support; it has been very helpful for me to learn new things about the distro.
I believe the suggestion was to edit your post rather than create a new one. However, now that you have created a new post with the same (but much more readable) information, please delete the first one.
- Click the 3 dots […] under the post and then the Trash icon.
This will no doubt save others from scrolling to Antarctica and back to see the relevant posts.
Thanks in advance.
Its also recommend to replace this Kernel, when you get a screen again.
You can do this with CLI but also you can use the GUI, can be find under Settings>Manjaro Settings Manager>Kernel
6.6 LTS is a good choice, but 6.11 is the new one… 6.12 will probably the next LTS Kernel soon.
Thank you, I hadn’t thought about the kernel since I just did a fresh installation with the latest ISO from the official site. I’ll do it!
