Compositing/Plasma broken on Nvidia

I’ve installed Manjaro KDE and been having intermittent issues that KDE just freezes. I can move the mouse but nothing happens. The only solution that works is to restart SDDM but that kills all windows. Using kwin_x11 --replace &, plasmashell --replace & breaks it further bugging out compositing if I restart SDDM. Is there any way to get Nvidia graphics cards working on Manjaro KDE?

In the logs there is nothing particular in dmesg and journalctl is just a mess with many small issues about the DE. Trying to run DISPLAY=:0 kwin_x11 --replace & in tty gives me tons of issues regarding framebuffer etc. and does not work. I’ve been trying all these combinations but only restarting sddm fixes it and that of course kills all windows.

I’m using KDE Plasma with Nvidia GPU for 3 years now. Not a single issue. Care to share:

from terminal?
mhwd -li
and
cat /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf
Use ``` above and bellow the output text for proper formatting.

Thank you for your reply @bogdancovaciu.

It baffles me too as I used to use manjaro a few years back and never had any issues. These issues were present from default install a week back.
Also while I mentioned compositing was broken I don’t know if that’s what is broken or not, it just seems like it.

Make a backup of your config, then give this one a try

Also, if you want a fixed layout instead, see the second example of the config i provided there, as an example.

Thank you for the help. I have applied the changes and will see if it happens again as it is sporadic. Also, the command

sudo mhwd-gpu --setmod nvidia --setxorg /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf

is new to me and very helpful!

So far I still got an issue after a long sleep that the display is completely gray with a movable mouse but no greeter. Again had to restart SDDM to be able to login. This is after applying the changes above given in your answer.

SDDM and lockscreen are 2 different things

Hi,

I am aware of that, so bootikg into lockscreen after sleep is the issue, and restarting sddm solves it since it restarts the entire environment but kills programs

I managed to acquire a journalctl -xe after reboot.
I removed a few entries related to modem manager etc. There are a few errors related to kde. In this case, i rebooted into a gray screen with a mouse cursor movable but nothing else could be done.

Attempting to run kwin_x11 --replace & or plasmashell --replace & gives 100s of errors in tty.
