While there may technically be ways to overcome your situation, the easiest is to start from scratch, and be more observant.
As a self-confessed newb, with limited Linux experience generally, this is logically your best path forward; certainly the fastest.
You should be able to copy any data you wish to keep to another location, and restore it later.
If you list the bunch of reasons in detail others might be able to suggest ways to overcome them.
