/etc/passwd.pacnew is the most confusing one because it only has one line but /etc/passwd has lot of lines

Also If I didn’t post any .pacnew files it’s either are same with .conf or all the lines has comment

The .pacnew omitted that by mistake. You definitely need it in your /etc/shells.

If you do not use Snaps, FlatPaks or AppImages, then you don’t need the security=apparmor, and the resume entry is only needed if you hibernate your system.

Change this accordingly in the existing /etc/pam.d/kde, or if there are no other differences, copy the .pacnew over it.

You probably don’t need to change anything there.

If you prefer to stick with kernel 5.15, then keep your existing /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.

Adopt the settings of the .pacnew.

Change the corresponding line in your existing /etc/passwd to the one from the .pacnew.

How to do the comparison and merging? I would recommend to install pacman-contrib and meld:

sudo pacman -Syu pacman-contrib meld

Then you can check for pacnew-files with

pacdiff -o

To edit/merge the config files perform

DIFFPROG=meld pacdiff -s

This will allow you to use a GUI tool. After doing the changes to your config files, delete (or backup) the corresponding pacnew file and proceed to the next one.

When you have been finished it could be required to perform

sudo update-grub
sudo mkinitcpio -P

if the corresponding config files have been touched.

Last but not least - reboot.

Elsewhere, I’ve already advised the OP to install either manjaro-pacnew-checker from the repository or pacnew-chaser from the AUR. :wink:

but at some point I may have to change kernel but again I guess whenever I install new kernel from manjaro-settings-manager it creates it itself, right?

Also /etc/pam.d/sddm.pacnew has gnome in it but I’m on KDE and
only other line difference is
session optional pam_keyinit.so force revoke which I’m not sure what is for

Out of curiosity when does .pacnew file appear , is it safe to delete it later ?

The initramfs will, but the configuration file won’t. The configuration file contains the directives that will be used to create the initramfs.

The “-” in front of those entries make them optional.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think this is related to a password manager, such as Plasma’s own kwallet.

Whenever there are changes to an existing configuration file that has been modified.

After you’ve merged them all, yes.
