System freezes intermittently (fresh install)

Hi,

Let me first preface this by saying that I’m not a power user. This should be obvious as you read on anyways. This may be incoherent, leave out essential details and give too many useless details. Also it could very well be that this is not a graphics related issue, but I’ve placed it here as I don’t know any better.

After running pacman -Syu a week ago or so, my system broke so spectacularly that I (and my friend who’s been an Arch user for >5 years) gave up on trying to repair it. Among other things, my XFCE settings were changed and I was unable to alter them for some bizarre reason.

Anyways, I decided this was a good time to do a fresh install as I had other reasons to do that anyways. It has mostly resulted in problems, which I suspect are related to the nouveau drivers which I am now more or less forced to use as the 340xx drivers are deprecated. For the record, the system has been smooth as silk (given my modest hardware) for over half a year using the official drivers, until the update/reinstallation. Right now my specific problem is:

  • System boots fine, but as soon as I start using anything other than the terminal (Xterm) it seizes up for anything from 10 seconds to several minutes. Typically my browser (Vivaldi) is the culprit, and it happens as soon as I start navigating it, alt+tabbing between windows or the like, but it also happens with other programs (juCi++). The freeze is usually prefaced by a few seconds where the mouse can be moved around but not click on anything before it stops moving

  • I left my computer on overnight and could not reproduce the freezing. Seems to be a problem only a relatively short while after booting

Some other problems that I had earlier, but that are now gone:

  • System failed to boot into a graphical environment. This seemed to be completely random as a restart would sometimes boot into a graphical environment, say 50/50. In most cases (but not always) I could access tty2

  • Warning “The root device is not configured to be mounted read-write! It may be fsck’d again later.” upon boot. This one I found to be particularly strange as I had given the “rw” option (to the right device/UUID) in fstab. In any case it never seemed to prevent the system from booting as I could get into tty2 and read and write to my heart’s delight… I don’t remember what I did, if anything, but it seems to be gone now.

  • Fancy glitched graphics for a split second after logging in

What I have done

  • The steps outlined in the Arch Wiki on loading the nouveau drivers (I was supposed to link this, but you’re not making this easy for me). Of note, I had no Xorg.conf, so I didn’t do anything with it

  • Added nouveau to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line in the grub config

  • Maybe something else I have forgotten…

The steps above and running mkinitcpio seems to have exorcised the “will it boot into LightDM” lottery, but the freezing still persists. I use this laptop for university work and turn it on and off quite often so the situation is unacceptable. On top of keeping me from being productive, it also makes me look like quite the fool while I chastise my fellow students for using Windows 10…

I’ve tried looking into htop while this happens, but obviously it’s not telling much since it also freezes. For what it’s worth I’ve never seen the CPU or RAM get maxed at the same time as a freeze, nor is it swapping. I once saw an Xorg process with status D but I have no idea if this is significant…

My hardware:

Lenovo ThinkPad T61
Intel T7700
4 GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia NVS 140M

Running kernel 5.4, XFCE, LightDM with stock/out-of-the-box settings apart from changing mouse sensitivity, I believe.

Logfiles taken a few minutes after a fresh boot and a few instances of the freezing:

I hope this is enough to work with. Thank you for your time!

result would be useful.

Here you go. This is after a reboot (and apparently I booted with the 5.10 kernel this time). Thanks for your time.

Edit: Uploaded a new one after installing smartctl and ran inxi as root

Hello,

Install proprietary drivers.

Is there really no other way? Is this just a “feature” with the nouveau drivers?

As I said, I’m no power user. I can compile my own drivers without issue but I’m guessing it will be a new clusterfuck with every update which I won’t necessarily be able to troubleshoot myself.

There is no need to compile. To install the latest nVidia drivers, just do:

sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia

Or do it from Manjaro Hardware Manager GUI.

If this works, then what is all the fuzz about deprecated drivers about?! The correct driver for my card is 340.xx.

Anyways I did it, but I haven’t rebooted yet. I’m assuming I need to edit my grub options and kernel parameters before rebooting, or does mhwd do this automatically?

I’m sorry. I thought it supported newer drivers. You can uninstall it with:

sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia
