4.19 Black screen

Just done upgrade via pamac all went well, got notification for newer kernel so installed that but now on boot up I just have a black screen, tried the fallback and same so currently on previous 4.14.78 -1 kernel

Please check this first:

Does switch to a text console with CTRL+ALT+F2 works?

How long ago was your last update?
Have you read the Announcements instructions?

Also run pacdiff and merge (not overwrite) new settings.

Hello, I registered to reply here, I am moving to Linux for the first time.
Anyway I am trying to learn as much as possible and I also experienced a black screen on boot after kernel Update from 4.14 to 4.19. It showed pretty much right away when installing Manjaro 18.0, and because I love the idea of the minimal .ISO I therefore installed Manjaro 17.12 Minimal xfce4, set it up as I liked it and backed it up with timeshift before upgrading to 18.0 without changing kernel. That went fine, but then I did the same procedure with the Kernel and indeed after a couple of reboots it wasn’t booting up. I then restored it using chroot from the live usb envinronment with the help of the timeshift snapshots i had created.

To help diagnostic I took a picture of the error I was getting at boot removing “quiet” from grub startup option. I also tried to remove the “resume” line and also renaming the boot= to dev/“my partition” but to no avail. Had to fallback to 4.14 in order to upgrade to 4.18.16 which is working fine.

I suspect there are problems with the amd PSP feature as I’ve read in the changelog of 419 that they introduced in this kernel features for security and cpus.

CTRL ALT F2 takes me to command prompt asking for login details but refuses to accept my credentials despite me being the sole account and the admin

Updated yesterday and there was another this morning
Tried the instructions on the update no joy

Make sure your password is correct (test your layout by writing your password at the username prompt).
If your $HOME folders permissions are messed up…

If you login as user in TTY, try startx to check that Xorg can start.
If nothing helps, boot to 4.14 and get logs

CTRL ALT F2 can log in and startx takes me to desktop but thats only for 4.14.
Any attempt to boot 4.19 results in a black screen

This Xorg log is not what I asked. I asked for the failed one (.old) and the journal log is difficult to read. Please make it in proper code formatting, you may see the preview, before posting. Please correct/edit your post…

If Xorg log with kernel 4.19 does not exist, please create one, booting in 4.19 and then, from a new boot in 4.14, check Xorg.0.log.old

Edit:

Please try to boot to TTY, editing grub menu and at TTY, try startx. If it fails (it should), post /var/log/Xorg.0.log , read how

I have never booted into 4.19
Please excuse my stupidity there is a lot of stuff I don’t know re linux I just tried it 2 years ago and liked it and have not looked into the coding back end of anything yet so have a lot to learn.
I cannot boot to 4.19 to even get to a point of loggin to tty.

You can log to TTY straight, if you edit grub menu. This HowTo is in the tutorial I posted in my last post. Then you can get error logs and post them to a Web paste-bin service, using terminal commands. Magic!!!

I was going to ask for more info, but it seems it’s a kernel problem. Or I can’t see anything useful to help. Sorry…

Small progress made
Ok managed to edit TTY from the grub menu from your tutorial and replace quiet with systemd.unit ect and pressed F10 to get back to grub menu
Booted to 4.19 kernel got about 6 lines of text then the screen went black again.
