1TB HDD not reading in Manjaro xfce

I have tried everything to open my ex Windows 10 external 1TB HDD which has a lot of files on it that I want or need + I want to use it with Manjaro xfce.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

Beside the legal aspect - are you sure your ex want your to see the files?

List your devices

lsblk -f

Pick the one with a ntfs filesystem

sudo mount -t ntfs3 /dev/sdxY /mnt

if the mount fails then it could be it has not been duly unmounted last time it was connected to a Windows system.

For example?

It could be that the drive was not properly ummounted or that Windows was not shut down fully while the drive was still connected.

Boot Windows again, have it check the drive and repair if needed.
If you don’t have Windows anymore, use a minimal Windows environment.
Like Hirens boot cd (it is called something like that).

If you don’t want or need it to be Windows compatible anymore:
copy the data elswhere (temporarily) and format the drive with a Linux native file system
then copy the data back to that drive.

I believe @Smoky may have meant an external 1TB HDD formerly used with Windows 10.

Of course, I suppose any translation might be plausible, without further clarification. :see_no_evil_monkey: :hear_no_evil_monkey: :speak_no_evil_monkey:

Thought I put that so it read that way, but obviously not by the come backs. Yes, 1TB HDD formerly used on Windows 10 - not matter what people answer back any known fix, none are working.

And to put such a question up for people to have a go at someone who is fairly new to problems with Linux - I need the files off the HDD as some are very important and not sure what else is on that HDD as I’ve not had Windows crap on my computer for a few years now.

I’m one that right clicks on all media to unmount the media and I have duly done that with all the media I have on the computer.

That is - perhaps unfortunately - not going to get you very far with this particular problem.

descriptions of what has been done in some GUI usually don’t help much

Not as easily as command line output - that can be understood by anyone here.
And advice can be given as well much more easily.

open a terminal
input:
lsblk -f
and/or
blkid

report back the result

We need something “concrete” to act or give advise on.

/dev/sr0: UUID=“66a1964c0004ab9f” LABEL=“Data disc (25 Jul 24)” BLOCK_SIZE=“2048” TYPE=“udf”

This was with blkid

That is some disk in your CD-ROM drive.
Not what you seem to be concerned with.

There is no sign of the external drive you seem to be concerned with.

Was it connected at the time of the command?

Also, there is no windows computer in this home and hasn’t been now for over 2 years. I run Linux Manjaro xfce on my big beast for over 3 years and this is the first time I’ve had to contually use this forum to try and get this 1TB HDD external to open in Linux

That is why I suggested Hirens boot CD …
under the assumption, that the file system on the drive is a Windows native one - like NTFS
which can be used, but not properly repaired in case of error, with Linux tools.
Windows native tools are needed for that.

this is an optical drive - not harddisk

That looks strange, the filesystem is usually seen on dvd optical disks.

If it is a hard disk - I think your file system has been damaged somehow.

What, sorry for asking this, would I do with the CD oncei it is burnt - and there is nothing wrong with this system, the disk I burnt to check it show it to be in excellent condtion.

It is an EXTERNAL 1TB HDD

I have no idea what you are asking about.
It’s your disk, you (presumably) burnt it.
I don’t know why or what it was intended for.

Don’t shout - if it is a hard disk - then the information you provided is wrong - the information relates to /dev/sr0 which usually is an optical device.

Open a virtual terminal - then run the command

lsblk -f

Please copy the entire output using the mouse and paste into a new comment.

So you have an ntfs disk on /dev/sdc with only one partition

To mount the device

sudo mount -t ntfs3 /dev/sdc1 /mnt

If there is no error messages then it mounted succesfull.

If there is error messages provide them message - copy/paste style like before

Or provide the output from

ls -l /mnt
