[Update] 2014-08-15: Kernels, Nvidia, I-Nex, Flash, XFCE
« on: 15. August 2014, 21:56:51 »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:: Manjaro Update - 2014-08-15 - Update-Pack 7 RC1

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm happy to present our first release candidate of Update-Pack 7!

With this we think linux316 is now ready for public use. This also means
linux315 is EOL and won't be supported by upstream anymore. Consider to switch
to the latest kernel version or one of our LTS kernels. Linux38 and Linux311
will be dropped soon as Canonical also will stop to support these kernel series
within this month.

With I-Nex we have a great application that gathers information for hardware
components available on your system and displays it using an user interface
similar to the popular Windows tool CPU-Z. I-Nex can display information for the
following components: CPU, GPU, Motherboard, Sound, Hard disks, RAM, Network and
USB as well as some system info like the hostname, Linux distribution and
version, Xorg, GCC, GLX versions and Linux Kernel info. Test out the brand new
release 7.4.0!

We also updated the proprietary Nvidia Driver to 340.32 which brings lot of
fixes and support for newer hardware.

Other than that, we have regular upstream updates and rebuilds by Archlinux.

Please report any issues you may find.

kind regards
Philip

I read that linux316 was a bad kernel. :-[ I just installed it and it works great, very fast thanks :)
I am always with Nvidia legacy. I have not tried the new 340 driver, you think that it works well with Compiz now?

Another flawless update. Colors for some reason look a little more vibrant and pop a little more with kernel 3.16. Not sure why but I like it.
Manjaro is the best, most customizable and easy distro.

I think this update doesn't need so much testing. Expect it in our stable branch soon.

Flawless update here as well. Installed 3.16 and I must admit that it does feel snappier, more "pop".
in Any event, a perfect update for me.

I've got 1 big Problem with the 3.16.x Kernels

Using Cinnamon everything from the stable repo besides the linux316 stuff,
then I noticed that it takes up to 4-5 tries to get it up running normal.
Most of the time I get a Message directley after initramdisk... 3.16.1... that there's an error with loading something with the i915 GPU.
I can log in, but Cinnamon tells me it's running in Software Rendering Mode.

Never had this Problem with 3.15 Kernels or older.

I'm using an Acer TravelMate 5735Z, with an Intel GM45 Chipset

added the option: i915.invert_brightness=1 to Grub Cmdline to have a working display. Never had any problems with that.

Any Solutions, Conclusions?

PS: here's the output:

Somewhere in last weekend’s updates (testing repo) might have been something that broke the Catalyst drivers for me. Whenever the screen turned off, it could not be turned on again. Computer responded to nothing (might have been because of the screenlock that was on) and so I had to do hard reboot. I tried with three different kernels (3.10, 3.14 and 3.16). This happened multiple times. And this has happened never before the weekend.

Downgrading the laptop-mode-tools (because it was newer than in repositories) did not help.

It was not about suspending, because my computer was not set to suspend or hibernate. Also, lights were on as normal and fan was spinning.

I changed to the free ATI drivers and the problem is gone.

Tried the same Kernel on the same Notebook with the same LM & DE (Unity & Cinnamon) with Ubuntu 14.04, no problems there.
So it has to be a Bug in the Manjaro Kernel of 3.16.x
